“Christine breaks down the art world comprehensively for students. She presents tools that let artists distinguish themselves and track their growth in the industry. Christine and ShowUp’s professional development workshops are student favorites, especially when the presentations align with local opportunities like art sales and craft markets.”

— Sarah ‘Val’ Valente, Artist and Educator

  • Show Up is located on Harrison Avenue in Boston's South End between Union Square and Randolph Street. We are on the same side as the iconic "Power Station" building, just a few doors down. We are down a set of steps inside the same entrance as Dahlia’s.

Please click here for more information.

  • There is on-street visitor parking on Harrison Avenue just outside the gallery, and on both sides of Randolph Street, just around the corner. There are metered spots on Washington Street, parallel to Harrison Ave. More and more of the GTI lots (surrounding ShowUp) are monthly passes only, so we wouldn’t recommend using those, but their lots on Albany Street under 93 are open to the public.

  • ShowUp exhibits 4 to 5 exhibitions per year. We have found that the unrelenting pace of commercial exhibitions left very little space to fully explore how to program around the work, and to offer educational and community-building programming. We aim to strike a balance between the commercial gallery’s schedule and those of large institutions.

  • We mostly work with artists local to New England. Being in the art industry means that we work hard to know who is part and up-and-coming in this art scene. We find artists through studio visits, recommendations, and stumbling upon them in other exhibitions (even those tiny library exhibitions, open studios, and the like - we are always paying attention!).

  • Outside of an open call, we are very unlikely to be able to exhibit an artist who submits work to us. At the same time, we have some alternative ways to promote and support artists. Check out our Artist Resources page for a few options, and use our submission form to get in touch with suggestions. We’re also always open to workshop/educational ideas.

  • This is one of the questions that gallerists hear most frequently. You can check out a video founder Christine O’Donnell made with Very Private Gallery about Working with Art Galleries for some advice she has.

  • The artwork you see on the walls in an exhibition is still for sale upon inquiry. Our nonprofit is focused on supporting artists, and financial support is one of the greatest ways we can provide it. We offer 70% of every sale to the artists as we seek to fulfill our mission.

  • Beacon Gallery is happy to deliver items for its clients in the Greater Boston Area or to have items purchased online to be picked up rather than shipped. We can also arrange to ship your art to you worldwide. We provide both standard shipping and museum-quality packing and crating, insurance, and shipping, based on our client's desires and the piece's specifications.

  • Beacon Gallery is the predecessor of ShowUp. ShowUp was the nonprofit ar, of Beacon Gallery, founded in 2019, but we felt it was too complicated to keep both. So, in 2023 we decided we would shift over to a completely nonprofit model. We felt a rebrand was necessary to fully mark the transition to a nonprofit and mark ourselves as no longer a commercial space, but rather a space dedicated to supporting artists comprehensively: with exhibitions, educational programming, and more community-building.

  • The founder of both Beacon Gallery and ShowUp, Christine O’Donnell came up with their names. There was much support from others in brainstorming such as then-associate curator Chenoa Baker. However, ShowUp was a lightbulb moment in the end.

ShowUp as a name intends to embody the spirit of our space: one that is multipurpose (like the word, with multiple meanings), that exhibits art (putting a show up), one that will ‘show up’ for others (providing quality programming), one that hopes others will physically visit/’show up’ for us.
